Night & VFR OTT Rating

VFR OTT Rating Requirements

The VFR OTT rating is the rating allows you fly above a broken or overcast layer provided that certain conditions are met, subject to the provisions and limitations of the Canadian Aviation Regulations. These conditions relate to the minimum weather requirements as well as essential equipment that must be carried and serviceable. VFR OTT does not permit flight into cloud and must be conducted with reference to a visible horizon.

Following the issuance of a Private Pilot License the Transport Canada requirements for the issue of a VFR OTT rating are as follows:


Requirement

Age

Must be at least 17 years of age


Medical

Valid Category 3 or 1 Medical Certificate


Knowledge

At the Flight Instructor’s discretion


Skill

At the Flight Instructor’s discretion


Experience

  • Must first hold a valid Private Pilot License (PPL)

  • Minimum Total Experience Requirements prior to issuance of the VFR OTT rating

    • 15 hours dual instrument instruction


VFR OTT Course Requirements

  • 15 Hours Dual Instruction, including:

    • 15 hours dual instrument instruction, 5 hours may be on simulator


Night Rating Requirements

The Night rating is the rating allows you fly aircraft at night, subject to the provisions and limitations of the Canadian Aviation Regulations.


A Night rating is recognized internationally. Night VFR does not permit flight into cloud and flight must be conducted with visual reference to the ground.


Following the issuance of a Private Pilot License or Commercial License the Transport Canada requirements for the issue of a Night rating are as follows:

Valid Category 3 or 1 Medical Certificate


Knowledge

At Flight Instructor’s discretion


Skill

At the Flight Instructor’s discretion


Experience

  • Must first hold a valid Private Pilot License (PPL)

  • Minimum Total Experience Requirements prior to issuance of the Night rating

    • 5 hours Dual Night (2 hours cross country)

    • 5 hours Solo Night

    • 10 hours dual instrument instruction (5 hours can be simulator)

  • Must Complete 2 hour dual Cross Country under night navigating by dead reckoning or pilotage with reduced ground references, with ability to use radio navigational aids or GPS.
